Should is almost always a lie.
It’s the way people get talked out of
doing the things they really want to do,
the things they are actually good at.
When you have something good or useful or beautiful
that you want to bring into the world, there will
almost always be a voice saying
you should do something else.
‘Should’ can come from society’s discomfort with people who are different, people who choose the abnormal path.
‘Should’ can come from toxic, manipulative relationships.
‘Should’ can come from your internal critic.
It’s still a lie.
Do the good thing anyway.
On Friday I went with Christine and our oldest daughter to see The War On Drugs at the Royal Albert Hall. Being in the room while they played Under The Pressure was one of the best moments of my life. At about 6½ minutes you can just about hear the crowd singing Wo-o-o-o-o wo-o-o-o-o. Imaging being a big circle singing that with 5,000 of your new best friends while the band are being absolutely amazing. It’s essential to do the small every day things. It’s also essential to go to the mountaintop once in a while.
Grow slowly
Jeff
As a child I was should upon which is shit upon if you don’t know, and you might not since Jeff is illuminating it. By my 60’s, I knew when this pressure from another was imposed on me. 70, and smooth sailing’, baby..no shoulds, just coulds. Gotta love mountaintops🏜️
Every time a "should" creeps into my thoughts, I know the answer is No.
