Getting busy with something you love brings wonderful initial euphoria.

But three nano-seconds later, procrastination, fear and obstacles arrive.

A week into your new health regime, there are delicious cakes for a colleague’s birthday. One piece won’t hurt, will it?

You promise yourself that you will write on Thursday evening but your friends are begging you to go out for a drink. Oh well, you can write next week.

Worst of all, that voice in your head tells you that you’re stupid to attend that acting workshop which you’ve wanted to do for years. You’re far too old and it’s not like you’re ever going to get rich and famous from it.

This is resistance at work. Our small ego, terrified that its comfy status quo is about to change, starts acting up. It thinks it needs to protect you from any hurt or failure which could arise from listening to your heart’s desire.

Resistance does everything in its power to thwart your ideas. It is clever and devious. It knows your weak spots intimately and will even convince you that you’re being sensible by quitting that stupid goal. But resistance is a compass to a better life.

It only happens when you’re heading in a lofty and desired direction. After all, there is no resistance to getting fat on your sofa, watching too much TV.

When that inner gremlin shows up, welcome it and say that you’re going to do it anyway.
