I'm interested in this idea Jeff - what about self esteem and confidence? For some that would be a big barrier to getting beaten up for fun. How did you keep going through it? A bear hunt is fun unless the bear is hunting you....I know that folk often lack the right kind trigger for internal motivation so they don't start a thing, or they give up quickly. You must have had some kind of push-pull factory that helped?
These are good questions. My answers may not be useful. I’ve never had low self esteem. I am very shy though. When I was a kid, I was so shy that I was afraid to play in my front garden on my own. I have the kind of parents whose response to that was to force me to play in the front garden on my own for 30 minutes every day. I was 5. They did things like that repeatedly throughout my childhood. I learned repeatedly that the thing I was scared to do would probably turn out fine if I could push through the initial horribleness that I felt. Another thing I learned from my parents’ example is to assume you can. That’s engrained pretty deeply in all of my family. For me, the question is usually not ‘can I?’ but rather ‘will I?’ // Maybe the thing to do if you lack confidence is to take small risks, give yourself small wins, and slowly build up that confidence muscle.

For people with this kind of blockage around creativity, I recommend Mark Pierce’s The Creative Wound. It’s helped a lot of people. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Wound-Heal-Your-Broken-ebook/dp/B07N7R2DF6/
