When Drew Carey presented Whose Line is it Anyway?, his catchphrase was, ‘The show where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter.
I’m thinking that Drew’s catchphrase applies to much of what people spend their lives obsessing over:
social status
office politics
celebrity
gossip
consumerism
annoyances
You and I already know this, of course, but that doesn’t necessarily stop us from getting distracted by points that don’t matter. That’s why I think it might be helpful to carry a little Drew Carey in your head to remind you to return your attention to the things that do matter, like joy and kindness and doing the work that feeds deepest part of you.
Drew Carey voice:
‘That’s right, the points don’t matter, just like Stacey getting the credit for that pivot table instead of you.’
‘That’s right, the points don’t matter, just like whatever outrageous thing [celebrity of the moment] did.’
‘That’s right, the points don’t matter, just like Terry driving a much nicer car than you.’
‘That’s right, the points don’t matter, just like getting stuck in the slowest checkout queue ever’
Thanks, Drew!
St Vincent did an excellent performance of Big Time Nothing on Graham Norton’s show last Friday. If you’ve got access to BBC iPlayer, I recommend the whole episode. He had Bruce Springsteen, Bill Bailey, Amy Adams and Vanessa Williams on the couch. The conversation was excellent.

Ben and I quote this all the time. So much of life (even some of the stuff that people call really-very-important) is really just all made up and the points don't matter
Trees are not stressed by squirrels is my present meditation....🪷
