Bonanza Clementine and Mr Pike are shopping in Marty Mart’s Bargain Time Supermarket. Mr Pike says, ’I’m in the mood to see the remains of my defeated enemies laid out on ice. Let’s go to the fish counter.’
‘I need some vegetables first, Mr Pike.’ Bonanza picks up a bag of baby carrots.
‘You know there’s no such thing as baby carrots, right? They’re actually just chopped up and polished adult carrots.’
‘I don’t care I love them.’ She puts the bag in her basket.
In the tinned goods aisle, she picks up creamy tomato soup and pineapple rings for herself and Vienna sausages for him. ‘Get me some tuna too,’ he says, I always hope I’m eating Gary Spotspopper from Year 3 when I have tuna.’
She reaches for the tuna at the same time as a young woman with a baby carrier strapped to her chest. The woman radiates the exhausted happiness of new motherhood.
‘You know there’s no such thing as babies, right?’ Mr Pike says to the tired and happy woman.
Bonanza is aghast. ‘Mr Pike! Don’t be horrible!’
But Mr Pike is horrible. He continues, ’They’re actually just chopped up and polished adults.’
I’m occasionally normal adjacent.
