Albert Einstein never said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.
A comic I read once did say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is called practice.
The difference is in how you do the same thing over and over.
If you want to be good at something,
if you want to excel in the game,
if you want to experience the full joy of participation,
you have to do the same thing over and over and over.
One of the reasons I created TREE is that I want to be a good writer. I have promised you an email every Monday to Thursday, so I have to write. It’s not an option any more; it’s my job.
If you want to be good at something, but you’re not doing it repeatedly – that’s insanity.

I love this paragraph:
“Here’s what I know: if someone’s much better than you at something, they probably try much harder. You probably underestimate how much harder they try. I’m not saying that talent isn’t a meaningful differentiator, because it certainly is, but I think people generally underestimate how effort needs to be poured into talent in order to develop it. So much of getting good at anything is just pure labor: figuring out how to try and then offering up the hours. If you’re doing it wrong you can do it a thousand times and not produce any particularly interesting results. So you have to make sure you’re trying the right way.” —Ava Huang
Grow slowly
Jeff
Hi Jeff! Just wanted to say thank you for the TREE emails. I'm constantly amazed that such a quick read can provide such inspiration, so much humor and often the sense of "I feel seen." I also really appreciate how much you pull from your own life experience. It definitely makes it feel like we're all growing slowly together.
TREE is a great thing you've gifted to us readers over the past several years. Thank you 🙏
