This week we have had the privilege of reading three very personal reflections from Miles Taylor. You probably remember Miles (then known as Sam) from FIELD GUIDE 21.
Miles, thank you so much for sharing with us this week!
In tomorrow’s FIELD GUIDE, we introduce a New Thing.
Grow slowly
Jeff
So, really quick. Think of an activity that you love to do. Now think of a time where you wanted so bad to do that activity, but you couldn’t. I’m going to use writing and writer’s block. Just switch out “writer’s” for whatever your activity is.
Writer’s block comes in all kinds of forms:
not being able to think of words
the lack of accountability to get words out into the world
questioning if your writing is even worth writing
straight the eff up laziness
Currently I’m struggling. Words are hard. Numbers are hard too. It’s frustrating as hell to not be able to put words out when you know good and well that your brain runs 700 miles a minute and each mile contains a billion words.
What’s worse is that you know if you just start somewhere, the words will flow out of you. Writing is almost like riding a bike. It looks like crap at first, then all of the sudden, you’re riding with no hands and showing off.
Having accountability matters when it comes to writing. Having someone stay behind you and almost nudge you to keep going. To keep writing, to keep thinking, to keep processing. It’s frustrating, but if you just keep putting words on paper (or computer) the block will have no choice but to dissolve.
I will offer this: Lofi Girl. It’s a continuous mix of literal beats and almost like, elevator music. It calms your brain. Literally. Calms it the hell down so you can realign your thoughts. Get your processors in order to let words spill out of you like water down a mountainside. (Spotify)
