Doctors used to believe stomach ulcers were caused by stress. Dr Barry Marshall thought they were caused by bacterial infection and could be cured by antibiotics. Of course, the medical establishment thought Barry Marshall was crazy. The establishment’s job is to maintain the status quo. Barry Marshall was determined to prove the real cause of ulcers. Lab animals were unsuitable subjects. The law prohibited testing on people. So he took bacteria from an ulcer patient, mixed it into a broth and drank it. He developed an ulcer soon after. Antibiotics cured it. Ulcer treatments changed. Lives were saved. Well done, Barry Marshall.
It can be good to be a little crazy about the thing you’re crazy about.
Let’s head into the weekend with some classic feel-good vibes (and a nod to yesterday’s song because Beyoncé borrows the bridge from Crazy by the duo Gnarls Barkley, one half of which was Danger Mouse).
‘Invincible Summer’ is available today only.
The art
‘Invincible Summer’ is a digital + analogue impressionist view of Selsley Common photographed on Boxing Day 2024 and turned into vibrant summer scene.
It’s a beautiful reminder
that seasons always change,
that in the cold dark of winter summer is already preparing to emerge,
that the hubris of humanity is no match for the deeper flow of nature,
that you are part of the deep flow,
that there is always reason for hope.
