I joined Facebook back when it was marketed to university students. I created my Twitter account when tweets were limited to 140 characters – that included any links! I wonder how many miles I’ve scrolled since then?
The miles have gone by more slowly the past few years. I’ve written a lot about my efforts to read or look at things of significance in my free moments instead of scrolly-scrolling. A thing I’ve learned is that it’s possible to consume mindlessly no matter how worthy the content.
I regularly put down my phone and two minutes later have no recollection of what I just read. To combat my mindlessness I started asking myself a question when I finish reading: What did I learn? Then I make myself answer the question. It helps (when I remember to do it).
There’s no point to curiosity if your discoveries slip away.
What did you learn?
I spent Wednesday in Oxford with Christine. I love that city. Here are two of the many wonderful things.
One: This painting by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in a wonderful little Impressionist gallery at the top of the Ashmolean Museum:
This song by The Black Keys played while we ate dinner in the Gardener’s Arms, a lovely vegan and vegetarian pub in Jericho.

So right about 'what did I learn?' Reminds me of why we used to have to write essays, which were absolutely about us learning what we'd learnt.
