Even the most empathetic human in the world cannot completely know what another person is going through. People all around you are living through terribly difficult things that you’ll never understand. And people all around you are experiencing happiness for reasons that you cannot comprehend.
You know those times when you are completely exasperated with someone because They. Do. Not. Understand.? It works both ways.
When people are unkind and insensitive, when they don’t show you their best selves, when they drive badly in your lane, try and remember one of my favourite mantras: Everyone’s dealing with their own shit, man.

When I think about being considerate of people, I remember my daughter who says she imagines that the slow car in front of her is carrying a precious cargo of lovingly prepared cupcakes and is therefore taking care of them. She understands how to nurture cupcakes on a precarious journey and can be empathetic of the driver's plight. You never know how much of an impact giving your children some responsibility can have!
Phew, I'm not sure why that felt so heavy.
