One.
Two.
Own you mistakes. This is a life tool that I didnβt figure out until at least the age of 35. Itβs such a relief to acknowledge that you made a mistake. Iβm not talking about making an excuse for your mistake, Iβm talking about being honest with yourself and others. Itβs hard to correct something that you are refusing to think is wrong, even to yourself. You will be startled how who often this completely diffuses a situation. Being afraid of punishment is never a good reason to make a choice on how you react.
I think people often apologise too soon.
If you are trying to apologise to someone and you find that pesky βbutβ creeping in, you are not ready yet. This isnβt a bad thing. Take some time to process your feels. You might need to talk it out with all parties so you can feel heard. Do what you need to get your βbuttβ out of the apology.
Three.
This weekβs guest author has been Teresa Roberts. If you havenβt yet, make sure you check out (and maybe purchase) her art.
Teresa, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with the FOREST. I liked the whole week but I especially liked Monday about asking why, Tuesday about a growth mindset encompassing limits, Wednesday about choosing what to work on and Thursday about seeing whatβs actually there. I liked todayβs too.
Advance notice
I started TREE in September 2020 with a private two-week beta. This has been my favourite year of writing ever. The fact that youβve been reading along makes it that much sweeter. Thank you.
Iβm in this for the long haul. That means doing it sustainably. That means taking breaks. Iβm taking two weeks off from 23 August to 4 September. Iβll be back in your inbox Monday 6 August for year two of TREE in our FOREST of growing slowly.
Something for the weekend
One of the best ways to move your perceptions closer to reality is to overcome your cognitive biases. Sahil Bloom has put together a primer of 20 cognitive biases, their definitions and how to stop them them: part one, part two.
Slow tip: donβt try to fix all 20 at once.
Happy weekend
Jeff
