Engine of wealth creation,
rapacious beast feeding on our labour,
just the way things are –
whatever you think about capitalism,
here’s a fact to remember:
we made it up.
Capitalism is a game we made up
with rules – (un)spoken, (un)broken
that change
with governments
and cultures
and times.
Right now, it’s the only game in town, a fact
that leaves many humans
feeling downwardly immobile. But
here’s a fact to remember:
Capitalism is just a game.
We made it up.
And so,Â
there is the possibilityÂ
of ninja moves,
of doing it upside down,
of using the game for goodness,
of subversion – in the most excellent sense of the word.
It starts
with remembering
that it’s a game
and learning how to play.
Learning how to play this game is work. It’s hard to do work after you’ve done eight hours of work or 12 hours of parenting or a day of learning. Nevertheless, that is the deal; it’s work. You could always turn the work into a game…
That’s what I’m trying to do. I spent most of my life ignorant of how the money side of our culture works because it bored me. But this game affects of everything. I can’t afford to be ignorant, so I might as well have fun learning to play.
Grow capital.
