There is a legend and lore that goes along with Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumors’ album. One of those legends is around why the song ‘Silver Springs’ didn’t make the original release.
In the 70s, part of song selection was determined by what would physically fit on a 12-inch vinyl record. Because of science, physics, and other very non-rock & roll stuff, only so many songs could make it.
Part of the story is that ‘Silver Springs’ was too long and wouldn’t fit. Another version of the story has to do with the lyrical content being about the breakup of Stevie and Lindsey. Who knows!?
The point is that the song is remarkable despite the reasons it didn’t get its day in the sun until much later. (Thanks, B-Sides and deluxe box sets!) Sometimes wonderful things don’t get recognition for dumb reasons. It’s not personal, and it would be a shame if ever kept you from creating more witchy magic like Stevie did.
This week’s very wonderful guest author was Steven Lee Tracy, Producer/Engineer/Mixer/Composer/Owner of Saint Cecelia Studios in Tucson, Arizona.
Thank you so much, Steven, for your very practical creative help and the great music
Here’s a quick recap:
Limitations reduce anxiety and indecision
It’s okay if you’re not the person to implement your idea. The important thing is that the idea gets made.
Be a tourist full of wonder and you will find new paths to follow
Let boredom drive you forward creatively
Don’t take it personally when your idea creation isn’t celebrated. Just keep making.
Happy Easter!
