There is a quote, ‘If you’re bored, you’re boring.’ I dislike and disagree with this tremendously. Perhaps my revision of this would be, ‘If you remain bored, you’re boring.’
Being bored is an important part of creativity and growth. It can let us know when we’ve outgrown something. It can be the catalyst for new ideas. It can shake us out of inertia.
I’m certain David Bowie became bored at moments – bored of his Ziggy Stardust character, bored of traditional musical instruments, bored of a hairstyle or pair of trousers.
Despite his propensity for getting bored, I don’t know anyone that would have classified him or his career as boring. Perhaps not every endeavour was a winner, but he created up until the time of his passing. That certainly doesn’t sound boring!
Are there areas of your practice where you feel bored? What are ways that you could use this to nudge you toward some new innovations?
