As a music producer, my job is to help artists fulfill their vision of their project. I’ve learned along the way the importance of setting limits.
While there is something romantic about taking the stance of ‘Anything goes! All options are on the table!’ (how open minded, right!?) I’ve found it to be the recipe for anxiety, indecision, and creative paralysis.
The first thing I do with a new artist is develop a set of limitations for the project. What instruments are we going to rule out? (for now) What genres are we eliminating as options? (for now) There may be times down the road to break the rules you’ve made for yourself, but for now we need to get started.
I’m not sure of the conversations between Lana Del Rey and producer Jack Antonoff, but they certainly eliminated a lot to end up with this beautiful and focused mood.
What are options you can eliminate to get closer to starting?
We’re starting with the music because this week’s guest author is Steven Lee Tracy, Producer/Engineer/Mixer/Composer/Owner of Saint Cecelia Studios in Tucson, Arizona.
