Albert Einstein never said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.
A comic I read did say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is called practice.
The difference is in how you do the same thing over and over.
If you want to be good at something,
if you want to excel in the game,
if you want to experience the full joy of participation,
you have to do the same thing over and over and over.
One of the reasons I created TREE is that I want to be a good writer. I have promised you an email every Monday to Friday, so I have to write. It’s not an option any more; it’s my job.
If you want to be good at something but you’re not doing it repeatedly – that’s insanity.
I’m putting three great links in the comments about effort, writing more and a history of that famous definition of insanity.
Next week’s guest author is Steven Lee Tracy. He is sharing five ideas from the world of music that you can use immediately in your creative work. Steven is a writer, musician, composer, producer and the owner of Saint Cecelia Studios in my hometown Tucson, Arizona. I met him a lifetime ago when my best friend was the drummer in his band. I saw them play in the coolest/grimiest clubs in Tucson. They also played in my church’s non-cool/non-grimy basement for my wedding reception. We all spent quite a lot of time together discussing music, the meaning of life and whether or not my wife Christine looked like the lead singer of The Wonder Stuff. (She didn’t.)
Next week will be brilliant. Tell all your creative friends.
Jeff
To really get the point across, this song is ten minutes long.

This is so applicable to my life right now. I'm trying to improve two aspects of my art and know it will be weeks and months of mistakes until I refine my process. I look for small successes and use the scientific process to track my failures. I try to view my failures as successes, they eliminate avenues and sometimes reveal special surprises.
